Each year we sponsor our Chapter 35 Fall Education Seminar and Golf Tournament. The year 2010 was truly special as our chapter celebrated its 50th anniversary. Our golf tournament is an opportunity for our chapter members, friends from other IRWA chapters, Region 2 leadership, and business associates within the greater Permian Basin area to enjoy the great West Texas weather, play a challenging golf course, and have a chance to relax as well as network. For years we've also met at the home of Steve Hartmann the evening of the tournament for an additional time for relaxation, networking and fellowship as well as enjoy adult beverages and an excellent cookout. This party is always fun and not to be missed! The morning after the tournament is reserved for the "educational" part of the seminar where our invited speakers provide information on topical subjects.
Our Chapter 35 Golf Tournament was completely full again this year with 120 players signed up. The traditional tournament prizes were awarded along with golf clubs, bags, balls, towels, and other goodies donated for the raffle. Everyone had a blast! Participants enjoyed a terrific Bar-B Q buffet sponsored by West Company of Midland, Nueva Vista Golf Course was in great shape, and the weather was perfect.
Golf hole sponsorships are offered to those wanting to support our chapter's scholarship fund and this tournament is our only fund raiser each year. Based on hole sponsorships during our tournament in 2009, this past summer our chapter awarded $10,000 in academic scholarships to twelve graduating high school seniors within our chapter area. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, in 2010 we increased the 2009 sponsorship record by 50% and added a record $15,750 to our IRWA Chapter 35 Scholarship Fund! This will enable us to offer even more financial support to area students for the coming year.
One other very important bit of news that we'd like to share: Many of those in Region 2 remember Doug Damron and his wife, Betty. Doug was a long time member of Chapter 35, was very active in IRWA, and a friend to everyone he met. Doug passed away this past November and as a tribute to him for his friendship and service to the IRWA we are designating our scholarship account "The Doug Damron Memorial Scholarship Fund". Education was always very important to Doug and we feel this will honor him and be a way for all of us who loved Doug to remember him.
